Navigating the Complexities of Online Extremism and Social Media Moderation
X ( formerly Twitter) has famously reshaped communication, making it integral for public discourse, activism, and community involvement in the digital age. But just like anything that involves communicating, there is a downside and it can be particularly dangerous… British police forces also decided recently to reduce their visibility on X amid increasing worries about extremist content and a perception that the site struggles with keeping harmful material off its platform. The move illustrates the increasingly thorny problem of free speech versus security online and the rising importance of policing social media accounts used by extremists.
The Rise of Extremist Content on Social Media
For years, social media platforms have battled the spread of extremist content across their services.
